From livestock rearing to finished product

  • Everything starts with livestock rearing.
  • After animals have been slaughtered for their meat, their hides and skins are left behind as waste matter. They are a by-product of the livestock industry.
  • The slaughterhouses then sell these skins, either directly, or to raw hide traders, who sell them on to tanners.
  • The tanning process then begins.
  • Once the tanning process is complete, and the hides have been turned into leather, the leather-manufacturing and processing industries purchase the leather and turn it into leather goods, footwear, apparel, furnishings, gloves, saddles and harnesses, etc.
